Founded in 1869, the City of Big Rapids is located in central Michigan along the Muskegon River and is home to Ferris State University. The city's 85 employees in 12 departments deliver a broad range of municipal and emergency services to its 20,000 residents with the goal of making Big Rapids an exceptional place to work, live, and play.
Previously, however, the city used an aging Mitel PBX system that was anything but exceptional. Managing the system not only required Big Rapids to contract an IT consultant 150 miles away, who charged an average of $350 to make simple moves, adds, and changes, it also lacked basic features such as call transfer, or conferencing. Moreover, city employees often depended on "while you were out" notes, which were easily misplaced and caused some citizens' inquiries to go unfulfilled. The phone system supported only a low volume of calls, frequently confronting residents with busy signals. Additionally, the city used a switched Ethernet data network that hindered employees' ability to promptly respond to citizens.
To address these issues and better serve its citizens, the city needed to deploy a powerful, easy-to-manage yet affordable voice and data solution.
